The castles that are dotted around the island in various strategic locations are a reminder of the many battles that Corfu has seen over the centuries.
Since the end of WWII, tourism began to develop in Corfu and the island is now a popular destination for those seeking summer sun, or an escape from a cold winter back home. As with much of Greece, there are many sites of historical and archaeological interest here as well as range of interesting museums, including one dedicated to Asian art.
There is some good hiking and walking potential for those that are keen, and plenty of opportunities for some good day trips, either to nearby islands like the upmarket Paxi, or to another country altogether by taking a boat ride to Albania.
After a day in the sun, there are plenty of things to do at night, with something to suit all tastes. There are good traditional Greek tavernas all over the island, serving excellent food in a lively atmosphere. If you’re looking for something even livelier, then you’ll find a good nightlife scene with plenty of clubs and bars full of revellers until the early hours of the morning.
