You’ll find plenty of expat owned restaurants cooking up traditional British favourites such as fish and chips, pie and mash, and plenty of hamburger takeaways; but for many, exploring the delights of traditional Greek cuisine is one of the highlights of a trip here.
As you would expect, there is some excellent fresh seafood to be enjoyed here. Two of the most popular dishes include kalamari, fried or grilled squid and bakaliaro, codfish fried and served with a garlic sauce.
Another popular appetizer is dolmades, vine leaves stuffed with rice, beef and onions. Main dishes that should be sampled are: mousaka, made with minced lamb, sliced aubergine and tomatoes, topped with a white sauce and baked in the oven and lamb fricassee, a delicious lamb stew made with spinach, eggs, lemon and olive oil.
For those with a sweet tooth, many desserts are laden with honey, nuts and sesame seeds. Kataifi and amygdalopita are two of the most popular desserts, but perhaps one of the highlights of Greek cuisine is baklava and a strong Greek coffee.
