Attractions

Attractions in Corfu
Achilleion: the villa of Achilleion was built in the late 19th century as a memorial to the Empress Elizabeth of Austria’s son who had committed suicide. This neoclassical building is well worth a visit, with a number of interesting features. The most noticeable features are the range of emblems and statues of the Greek warrior, Achilles.
Some of the most impressive statues are in the villa’s garden, some of which were commissioned by Empress Elizabeth herself. The most famous piece is undoubtedly ‘Dying Achilles’ by the German sculptor, Herter. The villa itself contains a small museum.
You might find it hard to date the architectural style here, as there have been many additions and changes during Corfu’s different periods of rule. In the 16th century during the Venetian period, a moat was added and the British made a number of alterations adding some buildings including the church during the 19th century. For many people, the highlight of a visit there is the breathtaking view from the top of the fort.
Aqualand: is a great place to take the kids, but you’ll find plenty of adults having a good time here too. It is especially popular during the height of summer when with the heat rising, people head to Aqualand to cool off. There are a good range of water features with a huge Jacuzzi, interactive adventure pools, and one of the world’s largest wave pools.
Angelokastro: situated on top a cliff top in the northwest of Corfu, you will find this old Byzantine fortress. From a distance, it looks impossible to reach but from the base of the hill (accessible by car) there is a steep path to reach the top. The fortress was once the western most point of the Despotate of Epirus, and during the Venetian period, the fortress was used by the governor. The views from here are simply breathtaking and you will find a small chapel and shrine inside a cave. It’s well worth the effort it takes to get here.
Church of Agios Spiridonos: Corfu boasts a number of interesting churches and this 16th century structure named after the patron saint of Corfu is one of the most interesting. After the fall of Constantinople, the body of St Spiridon was brought to Corfu and lies in a silver shrine here. At times during the year, the coffin is paraded through the streets of Corfu.
