Whether you eat in a local tavern or indulge in a feast at one of the city’s best restaurants, you will find many locals enjoying their food and of course, the company. International food can be found in abundance, although you should be sure to sample some local delights as well.
Breakfast is usually light, with just a cup of coffee being drunk. Lunch is eaten in the mid-afternoon and is also usually fairly light, while dinner doesn't normally start until well after nightfall and is often a feast.
Greek food offers a diverse array of flavours that are the result of thousands of years of cooking, eating and improving on recipes. National favourites include fava, a chickpea puree served hot with olive oil, onions and lemon juice; barbounia, red mullet which is often fried with garlic, and for desert, baklava, sticky, honey-based pastry.
There are countless restaurants throughout Athens to choose from. For a traditional dining experience, Plaka offers a number of local tavernas, while downtown Athens is full of cafes and trendy restaurants.
