Introduction to Xanthi, Greece
Thrace is a region in northeastern Greece, and Xanthi is one of its main cities. It has been involved in much of the long and troubled history of ancient Thrace over the centuries. The old part of town has lots of interesting old buildings, some of which house tasty cafes and shops. This is also where some of the most charismatic Xanthi hotels are located. Visitors can easily spend a day or two exploring the winding narrow streets of the oldest section of town, enjoying scenes of local life and stopping frequently for coffee in the cafes. Every Saturday, a traditional market is held in the main square, featuring famous local products like dried nuts and desserts. The town's seafood taverns are particularly well known for their fresh dishes and regional specialities. Metropolis Square is the heart of Xanthi, which is surrounded by some of the most important buildings and churches in the city, like Timios Prodromos and St Vlasios. The Folklore Museum and the Municipal Gallery are excellent venues to learn more about the heritage and culture of this ancient city.
