Introduction to Volos, Greece
The fifth-biggest city in Greece is also one of its most important ports. Volos is located in Thessaly, right at the foot of Mount Pelion where the mythical centaurs once allegedly roamed freely. There's a great mix of beaches and ancient sites in and around this city. St Nikolaos Square lies at the centre of Volos, providing an ideal setting for the outdoor cafes and benches that surround it. This is a good place to begin exploring the downtown core on foot, as the streets that run off the square are the most charismatic in town. Anavros Park stretches from the middle of town to Anavros Beach, which is the main beach of the city. A nice promenade runs along this beach, and just a few minutes south of here is Alykes Beach, an even nicer bit of sand. Athanasakelon Archaeological Museum should be visited to learn about the many ancient sites around Volos. There are lots of hotels in Volos, most of which are located near the sea or in the centre of town.
