Introduction to Veria, Greece
Veria is a medium-sized town in Greece located around an hour's drive west of the city of Thessaloniki. The city lies at the foot of the Vermion Mountains and is the commercial hub of Macedonia. Veria is built on the site of Beroea, an ancient city which was renowned from the 4th century BC. The city's small, narrow streets and classic old Macedonian houses provide fascinating sights to take in. Here you can find over 72 Byzantine churches, one of them being the 10th century Church of Christ, which was built in a rare architectural style. Veria's City Hall is located in a neoclassical old Greek school building, while the neoclassical Courthouse and Orologiou Square are well worth a visit. There are many Veria hotels located throughout the city, and the most popular time to visit is during the summer, especially between mid-August and mid-September when the Imathiotika Festival is staged. During the festival, you can observe this rich cultural programme which derives primarily from the town's tradition. Elia, in the town centre, offers great natural beauty with a stunning view over the Imathia plain.
