Introduction to Syros, Greece

One of the most popular islands in the Cyclades is Syros, home to the capital of the Cyclades and one of its most important ports, Ermoupoli. This port city is the largest on the island and one of the most interesting and lively places in all the Greek islands. Its whitewashed mansions and neoclassical buildings trickle down the hill to the natural harbour. Maioulis Square, lined with sidewalk cafes and impressive buildings like City Hall, is the heart of the action. The Vaporia Quarter, where sea captains traditionally lived, is one area not to be missed. Check out the Archaeological Museum for a good overview of the heritage of Syros. Ano Syros is the second town on the island and a great place to experience a medieval village that hasn't changed in centuries. All of the villages on the island seem to cling to the hills, and visitors can find good Syros hotels everywhere there is a settlement. For a Greek island that focuses more on traditional than partying, this is a good bet.
