Introduction to Symi, Greece
Symi is an island much closer to the mainland of Turkey than the rest of Greece. The interior is almost entirely mountainous, with several important ancient sites scattered around. The harbour town of Symi is the main settlement on the island, containing the majority of options for eating, shopping and entertainment. The harbour is particularly scenic and definitely worth exploration. There are only 2,500 residents on the island, and tourism makes up most of its economy. This ensures plenty of hotels in Symi despite its relatively isolated situation. Above the town of Symi is the Kastro, a citadel built by the Knights of St John during the Crusades. The three churches in the town date to the Byzantine era and are excellent examples of religious architecture. The village of Nimborio is another good place to visit for its ancient Pelasgian walls and surviving artisans' workshops. The Panormitas Monastery, a popular attraction, is a Greek Orthodox monastery on the southwest coast that is still inhabited by monks.other spellings: symihotels, symi hotell, symi hote, symi hotles, hotelin syme, symmi hotes
