Introduction to Serres, Greece
Serres is a city in Greece's Macedonia region, in the country's northeast. It is finely situated on a fertile plain. To the east and north of the city rise the majestic Rhodope Mountains. The city's population is some 56,000. Among the city's landmarks is a statue of Emmanouel Pappas, a hero in the Greek War of Independence. The pretty church of Birth of Theotokos is worth a look, too. Moreover, Serres is home to many parks. It is picturesquely situated, stretching from the forested hills of Koula to a ruined castle. There are two parks on Exochon Street, which leads up to Koula. One if them is the lovely Agioi Anargyroi Park. Come summertime, many popular nightclubs and eateries open up. Serres hotels offer value for money in this relatively cheap place to spend the night. Serres is known for its delicious gyros (meat roasted on a spit) and souvlaki (grilled meat and vegetables).
