Introduction to Santorini - Pyrgos
Pyrgos may no longer be the capital of Santorini, but much of the Greek island's medieval past remains in this picturesque village which boasts 33 churches, a handful of Pyrgos hotels, and one of the best views of the entire island of Santorini from the summit of the hill where the village was established. The heart of the village remains its 15th century castle, only one of five Venetian castle states established during their empire. Stone houses and churches form much of the village's unique architecture. Beautiful icons and frescoes cover the church of Theotokaki, while the Holy Trinity Church contains Byzantine icons and clothing within its small museum. Although the Agia Triada Church contains many impressive icons, it was actually restored after an earthquake destroyed the original church in 1956. The entrance of the large Agia Theotkou Church features a unique brick pattern. However, the most impressive local religious building of all, Profitis Ilias Monastery, lies four kilometres away from the centre of the village.
