Introduction to Santorini - Karterados
The volcanic Greek island of Santorini may rank among the nation's most visited tourist destinations, but just a 15-minute walk away from the island's capital of Fira lies the tranquil village of Karterados. There may be over a dozen Karterados hotels, but this village - situated in a ravine next to a stream - has remained relatively unchanged since its existence was initially recorded during the 17th century. A memorial plaque honouring WWII casualties from Karterados and a traditional windmill stand in the village square. However, the oldest area of the village lies on the square's west side, past a sharply curved road leading to the steps of Galaois. One of the most unusual areas in the village is filled with cave houses and buildings constructed directly into rocks. The roofs of these unique homes are at the same level as the cobbled streets on which they were built. The community also boasts a beach with black sands and a quiet atmosphere.Visit our Santorini Travel Guide
