Introduction to Santorini - Caldera Cliffs
Over 3,500 years ago, one of the world's most dramatic volcanic eruptions took place in the centre of the Aegean Sea. The remnants of that explosion can be found on the Greek island of Santorini, especially on its western end. The Santorini Caldera has a diameter of nearly six and a half kilometres, and steep cliffs which are approximately 300m tall surround its central lagoon on three sides. These cliffs are known as the Caldera Cliffs, and most Caldera Cliffs hotels can be found in the island's two largest communities. Many of these accommodations, however, contain several stairs and a good deal of them lack facilities for children. Some of the cliffs surrounding Fira, Santorini's biggest municipality, are nearly 366m tall, and visitors can reach their summits by taking donkey rides or cable car journeys. The island is well known for its breathtaking sunsets but those overlooking the island's other major community, known as Oia or Ia, are said to be among the most beautiful in the world.
