Introduction to Santorini - Akrotiri
Akrotiri is the name of an ancient Minoan settlement dating to the Bronze Age on the Greek island of Santorini. The excavation site is one of the most impressive, extensive and important on Santorini, and a major tourist site. The settlement was buried by a volcanic explosion in 1645 BC, preserving much of the site in perfect detail. There is a beautiful secluded beach just down the slope from Akrotiri, where a few resorts have been built. Travellers who want a quiet experience while visiting the area will love the atmosphere of the Akrotini hotels. There is a modern village just above the archaeological site of the name same. This is where visitors can find amenities, such as cafes and shops. But, as it's a tiny hamlet, few tourists linger any longer than it takes to explore the ancient ruins and grab a snack or cold drink.
