Introduction to Samos - Kokkari
Some of the most beautiful beaches on the Greek island of Samos are located in the picturesque village of Kokkari, whose name means small onion in English. Kokkari's location in northern Samos is just 10kms from the island's capital and the most populated city, whose name is also Samos. The village was originally built on a couple of small hills over the ruins of an ancient Christian community, but has since extended towards the valley below. There are numerous Kokkari hotels near one of the village's unique beaches. The accurately named Long Beach is the biggest of Kokkari's three beaches and can be found on the village waterfront. The strong northern winds which regularly blow along North Beach make this beach both a popular windsurfing destination and a good place to learn the sport at the local windsurfing school. The two smaller and calmer beaches east of the village are both appropriate places for families and any other visitors seeking more sheltered places to sunbathe.
