Introduction to Peloponnese - Sparti
The modern Greek city of Sparti in the Peloponnese may be better known to most visitors as the location of the ancient city of Sparta. Although modern Sparti may have a far smaller population than modern Athens, the city still boasts bed and breakfasts as well as Sparti hotels. The modern day city was first established in 1834 and was intended to become one of Greece's most attractive cities, filled with parklands and boulevards lined with trees. Although this city contains far fewer landmarks from its ancient past than Athens, many ancient Spartan artefacts are displayed in the seven rooms of its archaeological museum. The Museum of the Olive, on the other hand, is dedicated to one of Greece's most prevalent crops. Remnants of Sparta's Acropolis and ancient theatre still stand along with another building called the Menelaion. One thing which has remained the same throughout the centuries, however, is the impressive view of Mount Taygetos which can be seen from here.
