Introduction to Peloponnese - Kyllini Beach
No community or port in mainland Greece's Peloponnese region lies further westward than Kyllini. Tourists may only stay here long enough to catch ferries to the nearby islands of Kefalonia or Zakynthos, but this smaller port contains enough attractions to justify spending a night or two at one of the scenic Kyllini Beach hotels. Citrus trees and olive groves grow along the entire 11km length of the golden beach, from which visitors can see Kefalonia, Zakynthos, and even Ulysses' birthplace of Ithaca on clear days. Children can safely swim in Kyllini Beach's clear waters, venture towards the scenic village square or amuse themselves in the playground next to the port. Another place where visitors can soak in comforting waters is the community's natural thermal springs, while the nearby Crusader castle and fortress of Chlemoutsi has dominated the landscape since approximately 1220. This port lies just three kilometres from the village of Kastro, 65kms from Ancient Olympia, and 75kms from the much larger port of Patras.
