Introduction to Pelion - Agios Ioannis
The Greek village of Agios Ioannis lies on the east coast of the country's mainland, in a region called Pelion. Prior to the 1960s, Agios Ioannis was a tiny fishing village near the Aegean Sea. Today, there are at least 46 Agios Ioannis hotels in this popular resort area 55kms from the city of Volos. The long and sandy main beach here runs parallel to the village's main road, which is lined with places to buy and eat food. Equally numerous are bars and tavernas, most of which remain open far into the night, especially during the busy summer tourist season and on weekends. Stone fountains and cobblestoned footpaths are found throughout the village, and the Pelio mountains provide a breathtaking backdrop. The two other major beaches here are Papa Nero, famous for its white sand and pebbles, and Plaka, said to resemble beaches along the Indian Ocean coastline. Agios Ioannis is easily accessible by both bus and private vehicle.
