Introduction to Naxos - Aghios Prokopios
The biggest and most vibrant of the Cyclades Islands, Naxos is a popular sunshine destination for holidaymakers heading to Greece. Unlike many islands popular with tourists in the region, agriculture vies with modern attractions for importance to the local economy, making for more verdant countryside than in many similar holiday spots. Hotels at Aghios Prokopios enjoy excellent access to the island's key transport links. The airport is only five minutes to the north, although are relatively few flights, so most people travel to and from the island by ferry. The port at the northern end of Naxos town can be reached in less than 15 minutes. The main city offers plenty of modern amenities for visitors feeling a bit remote in their villages. A little island in the harbour is home to the area's most distinctive landmark, a marble gate from the 6th century BC that is all that remains of the Apollo Temple. The ancient walled parts of the city offer plenty of fun in the form of exploring historic alleys. Most of the excellent sandy beaches lining the island's western coastline can easily be reached by road but, as the village is home to one of the best, sun-seekers need not travel much.
