Smack in the middle of mainland Greece is the city of Makrakomi. It sits on the southern flanks of the Western Othrys Mountains, overlooking the scenic Spercheios River and the surrounding valley. This market town isn't on the tourist trail, so visitors will find a quiet place filled with local Greeks and a handful of ancient landmarks. The Acropolis of Makrakomi is a good place to start. Its hilltop location affords wonderful views over the city and valley. The Church of Agia Paraskevi dates back to the Prophet Elijah and is another popular historic spot just above town. Platistomo is a great place to soak in the natural hot springs, and a handful of excellent little villages can be visited on daytrips from Makrakomi, such as Kastri with its medieval castle and Litosselo with its Folklore Museum. Visitors who wish to linger in this quiet town have few Makrakomi hotels to choose from, but those on offer are cosy, family-run inns that provide an authentic experience.
