Introduction to Lesvos - Molyvos
Only the Mytilini Strait separates Greece's third-biggest island, Lesvos, from Turkey. Few places on Lesvos welcome as many tourists as the community of Molyvos on the island's north coast. One of the most famous Molyvos hotels was once the local olive oil factory. However, regardless of where people stay here, they will be less than 90 minutes from all Lesvos attractions, many of which are located in Molyvos itself. Musicians from not only across Greece but throughout the world often perform at the Byzantine Gattilusi Castle, while colourful red tiles top the grey stone houses most residents live in. The harbour remains a working fishing port although it is considered among Greece's loveliest harbours, but visitors must walk a few metres along the main beach before its stony shores turn into more comfortable sand. The beach's waters, however, are blue, clear, and ideal for snorkelling and swimming. Although motorcycle traffic can be noisy on weekends and summer days, the community is relatively quiet during most other times. This is also a community of culture, filled with art galleries, intimate tavernas, and centres offering lessons in iconography, yoga, and many other fascinating subjects.
