Introduction to Lemnos, Greece
In the northern part of the Aegean Sea is the island of Lemnos, an ancient place with roots tied to the Greek gods, heroes and legendary rulers like Constantine. This large island has a little of everything for the curious traveller. Myrina is the main town and port on the western coast of the island, where most visitors arrive by ferry. It takes 30 minutes to walk from the port to St Nikolaos Chapel in the centre of town. The Castle of Myrina sits just above the town, offering incredible views and sunsets, and everyone should stop by the small museum to learn more about its history. Most of the places to eat, drink and shop are in Myrina, but Kontias Village in the southwest corner of the island is also worth a visit to see a more traditional side of Lemnos. Several nice sandy beaches can be found just outside Myrina and on the eastern coast near Keros. Hotels in Lemnos can be found in most villages and are typically modest, family-run inns.
