Introduction to Larissa, Greece
The large city of Larissa is the capital of Greece's Thessaly region and a major industrial and commercial centre. Some of Greece's best known figures were born or died here, including Achilles and Hippocrates. The Pineios River cuts through the heart of Larissa, with several of the city's main landmarks straddling the water, such as the Cathedral of Saint Achillius. Among the many interesting museums here, the Municipal Gallery offers a fascinating collection of artwork and sculptures from the classical period of this region. The Historical Folklore Museum and the Archaeological Museum are well worth a lengthy look. Right inside Larissa are two amazing ancient ruins. The Ancient Theatre is a huge amphitheatre, while Fortress Hill and the Ancient Agora lie just above the town.
