One of Greece's oldest cities is Lamia, named for the daughter of Poseidon and continuously occupied since the 5th century BC. Although today the city has a decidedly modern face, there are still some impressive ancient landmarks open to visitors, such as the Kastro, the city's fortified acropolis. There are four main squares in Lamia that are ideal for people-watching and grabbing a bite to eat at one of the sidewalk cafes. Freedom Square is home to city's main cathedral and a number of pleasant outdoor cafes, while Diakos Square, People's Square and Park Square are typical Greek plazas with statues, fountains and local people. Hotels in Lamia are scattered all over the city, with a large concentration in the central district near the main squares. Tourism is not a major force in this central Greek city, so visitors will discover an atmosphere that feels traditional yet modern and forward-looking.
