Introduction to Kozani, Greece
The Greek city of Kozani lies inland from the Aegean seacoast in the western Macedonian Aliakmonas River Valley, close to the man-made lake of Polyfytos. Some 120kms from Thessaloniki, the city is set between four mountains, Askio, Pieira, Vermio and Vourinos, and has a cold, dry winter climate combined with hot summers. Famous worldwide for its production of saffron, the city has its own local folklore based on the ancient Dionysian religion and celebrated with much priapic profanity and drinking during carnival at the end of the winter season. Kozani hotels are full to overflowing during the festival, and mostly busy year- round hosting both business travellers and holidaymakers. The city is ancient, with an Iron Age necropolis the earliest excavated remnant, and grew with the arrival of Christians fleeing the Ottoman invaders in the 14th century. The magnificent Aghios Nikolaos Church and the famous Kozani school and library were built in the 17th century, and much of the rest of the city was constructed during the following 200 years. Nowadays, the great heritage buildings combine with new developments to make an exciting destination for visitors.
