Komotini is a city located in northeastern Greece with a large Turkish-speaking minority which makes up 50 per cent of the population. Komotini is a thriving administrative and commercial centre. The city is heavily centralized, with most of the services and commerce based around the city's historical centre. Getting around on foot is extremely practical but traffic can also be very heavy. The evergreen Municipal Central Park is a popular site in the city centre, as is the WWII Heroes' Memorial which stands 15m high and is nicknamed 'The Sword' by locals. Tourists are drawn to the old commercial centre due to its traditional shops and workshops which have long since disappeared from many other Greek cities. There is also a modern shopping plaza towards the northwest of the city which houses supermarkets, a cinema complex and department stores. There are several museums in the town, including the Folklore and Byzantine museums as well as an open-air Municipal Theatre which stages cultural shows. There is a wide range of Komotini hotels which cater for all kinds of visitors in the heart of the city.
