Introduction to Kefalonia - Argostoli
One of Greece's most popular tourist destinations may be the island of Kefalonia on the nation's west coast, but the island's largest community, Argostoli, is overlooked by many tour operators. Although Argostoli hotels are outnumbered by apartments for rent, this may be one of the easiest places to find accommodation on Kefalonia as tour operators block book many rooms in several other island resorts. Argostoli has been Kefalonia's capital since the 1750s, but a 1953 earthquake destroyed most of its ancient buildings. However, much history remains at Kefalonia's archaeological museum and the imposing Korgialenian Library, where approximately 50,000 old manuscripts and books are stored. The library's ground floor houses the Korgialenios History and Folklore Museum, which features a reconstruction of a traditional island home during the 19th century. Not far from the library stands Kefalos Theatre, considered one of Greece's finest. Shops line the pedestrian-only Lithostroto Street, which contains the Campana Square clock tower and St Spyridon Church. Most of the community's cafes, restaurants and nightlife can be found at Plateia Valianou square.other spellings: argostolihotels, argostoli hotell, agostoli hote, argustoli hotles, agostoli hotle
