Introduction to Kavala, Greece
The Aegean seaport city of Kavala lies in the northern Greek province of Macedonia on the Bay of Kavala, across from Thassos Island. Nestling between the slopes of the hills surrounding the bay, the town was founded in the 6th century BC by settlers from the island, and is reputed to have been famous in ancient times for its gold mines. Famous Romans Cassius and Brutus, as well as St Paul, are documented as having stayed here, and the town endured occupations by the Byzantine and Ottoman empires. The old town, Panaghia, lies on a rocky hill overlooking the bay, and holds Kavala hotels as well as charming little tavernas serving traditional northern Greek dishes. The massive castle, the medieval aqueduct, the classic Islamic Imaret, museums displaying the archaeological, folkloric and tobacco-growing history of the region and the beautiful Mehmet Ali House are all attractions for visitors to Kavala. Five beaches, including the town's Kalamitsa and Rapsani beaches, lie along the shoreline, offering clear blue waters for swimming and expanses of pale, soft sand for relaxation. other spellings: avahrahotels, otelin avahla, avela hotell, avara hotle, avala hote, kavaia hotes, kavaal
