Introduction to Kalambaka - Kastraki
The village of Kastraki is situated in the geographic centre of mainland Greece in an area called the Plain of Thessaly. The Peneios River and Pindus Mountains may be nearby, but the towering Meteora rock pinnacles and the monasteries placed on top of them are by far this region's most famous tourist attractions. Most visitors to this area stay in either Kastraki or the slightly larger town of Kalambaka, but Kastraki hotels are smaller and closer to the Meteora rocks. Staying in this small community is especially recommended to visitors without vehicles as they can easily walk to Meteora along tree-lined footpaths. Grape vines grow along many of the houses in this village filled with interesting architecture and narrow cobbled streets. Storks frequently nest in the village square in the middle of their long annual migration between Greece and Africa. Six of the original 24 Meteora monasteries remain open today, including the female-only Agiou Stefanou facility. Those searching for shops, restaurants, and nightlife will have to venture two more kilometres east to Kalambaka.
