Ithaca was the homeland of the Greek hero Odysseus, and modern day travellers still find this island in the Ionian Sea a magical place to explore. There are only around 3,000 residents on Ithaca, but that's part of its charm. The main town of Vathy is home to one of the world's largest natural ports and has been an important destination since the Mycenaean era, more than 2,000 years ago. Clear blue seas, white sand beaches and rolling mountains await visitors to this friendly island. Conditions rarely get crowded here, even in summer. Towns like Kioni, Frikes and Vathy all have great nightlife, restaurants and interesting shops as well as beaches. These towns are the best place to find good hotels in Ithaca. A walk up the mountain to Exoghi is something everyone should do once, just to admire the incredible views all the way to the mainland. Another popular excursion is a visit to the 16th-century Monastery of the Virgin Mary at Kathara.
