Introduction to Ios - Port
The main gateway to the lively Greek island of Ios is the seaport overlooking Ormos Harbour on the island's northwest coast. The port of Ios may be just two kilometres away from the island's largest community, known as Chora or Hora, but the village closest to the port is a smaller and more tranquil settlement called Ormos or Yialos. Most vessels which dock in the port of Ios arrive from other Greek islands or the Athens port of Piraeus, which has officially changed its spelling to Pireas. Port hotels on the island are generally quieter than their counterparts in nearby Chora, the heart of the island's legendary nightlife scene. The beach closest to the port is a more peaceful and less crowded alternative to the popular Mylopotas Beach nearby. On the opposite end of the port stands the 17th century St Irini Chapel, which once served Catholic and Orthodox congregations at the same time.
