Introduction to Ios - Ormos Beach
For many passengers who enter the Greek island of Ios by ferry, their first glimpse of the island is its only port and second-most populated settlement. Both the port and its nearby beach are called Ormos, Gialos or Yialos. Ormos Beach hotels are quieter alternatives to those in nearby Hora, the capital of Ios and the heart of the island's legendary nightlife. Ormos Beach ranks second only to Mylopotas in terms of busy Ios beaches, but the former beach is still, by far, the less crowded of the two. Although this beach contains its fair share of restaurants, shops, bars, golden sand, and water sport opportunities, the most unique thing about it is its stunning view of the ferries sailing into the nearby port, just metres away from the beach. Ferries also frequently depart from Yialos port to several smaller nearby islands and Ios beaches. Aside from the port and the beach, the other major attraction here is the Agias Irinis church, which like most other local buildings and homes is a brilliant whitewashed colour.
