Introduction to Ioannina, Greece
On the western shore of Lake Pamvotida is the ancient town of Ioannina, the largest city in the region of Epirus. Founded by the Byzantine Emperor Justinian in the 6th century, Ioannina has a rich history of Byzantine architecture and culture that continues to intrigue travellers. A good place to start is one of the excellent museums here, such as the Byzantine Museum or the National Archaeological Museum. In the centre of the city is the ancient Kale Fortress with its maze-like web of cobblestone streets and important sites like Fethiye Mosque. Surrounding the castle is the old quarter of Ioannina, a magical district loaded with interesting architecture, quaint shops and local people. While there are certainly days worth of exploration in the heart of the city, just outside are other great attractions like the ancient ruins at Dodona.
