Introduction to Halkidiki - Athos - Ouranoupolis
Mount Athos is a UNESCO World Heritage site in Halkidiki, Greece. The peninsula is located on the Greek mainland and is easily accessible from Thessaloniki. Mount Athos is home to a number of monasteries and it’s possible to stay in one of the basic guest houses on the mountain. However, most visitors to Mount Athos choose to stay in one of the Halkidiki hotels in Ouranoupolis, and then take a daytrip. In addition, women must stay in the resort as they are not allowed inside the monasteries. The monasteries are only accessible by boat; on landing it’s possible to hike between many of them. Ouranoupolis hotels in Halkidiki are usually given at least three stars, while there are a few exclusive five-star accommodations. However, whichever hotel that visitors choose, they should be able to enjoy the stunning view of Mount Athos.
