Introduction to Drama, Greece

Drama is a town in northeastern Greece with a population of roughly 56,000 inhabitants. It is the economic hub of the municipality of the same name. During the First Balkan War in 1912, Bulgarian troops took the town from the Ottomans, but later the town was incorporated into Greece. Mostly the town is visited for its surrounding natural beauty, but the town centre itself offers a remarkably authentic look at a Greek town untouched by tourism. This is the place to brush with Greeks in cafes and bars over an ouzo. After dark the town springs to life, with locals from neighboring communities frequenting Drama's nightclubs. Agia Varvara Park is a relaxing place for a stroll with its interesting tobacco warehouses. There are also some old Byzantine churches to discover as well as two history museums and a theatre. Nearby Mount Falakro, just to the north of Drama, has a small but modern ski resort, while the town also hosts a short film festival each year. A number of Drama hotels are located in the town centre in addition to a few sprinkled around the outskirts of the town.
