Introduction to Crete - Matala
The famous caves within Matala's breathtaking cliffs were first created during the Neolithic era. Matala itself, on the other hand, remained a tiny fishing village containing no fewer than 10 houses until the 1960s, when its impressive caves were discovered by hippies throughout the world. Although the hippies have long since disappeared, the local tourism industry has never stopped growing. Today, most Matala hotels are modest and low price accommodations ranked between one and three stars. The famous cliffs protect and create a small bay around its 300m beach shaped like a crescent moon, but visitors are also free to explore the caves themselves during the day, although they are closed to the public at night. Ancient Greeks, Romans, and countless other civilisations have used the caves as refuges and places to entomb their dead. One local cafe is said to have inspired folk singer Joni Mitchell to write a song about her experience with the hippies who resided in the caves in the 1960s. The sunsets here are breathtaking and the nightlife is fairly lively. Visit our Crete Travel Guide
