Introduction to Crete - Kolymbari
Among the most relaxed and unspoilt communities on Greece's biggest island, Crete, is the tiny fishing village of Kolymbari. This village situated in northwest Crete, 15kms east of Kissamos and 23kms west of Chania on a scenic peninsula called Rodopou, rests between the Mediterranean Sea and towering green cliffs. The community has no large chain accommodation, so most Kolymbari hotels are small, intimate, and independently owned. The pebbly shoreline of the closest beach is often mixed with fine and soft sands shipped from other beaches, but its waters provide ideal swimming conditions. Many local tavernas specialise in fish dishes, while one of the most unique cafes here was constructed from stone on the beach. However, Kolymbari's most famous attraction is the Gonias Greek Orthodox Monastery whose current buildings have been used since the early 1600s. The adjacent Ecclesiastical Academy of Crete welcomes visitors as long as they dress modestly and take no photographs. Visit our Crete Travel Guide
