Spread over a sweeping hill overlooking the Aegean Sea is the ancient town of Archanes, with its traditional small-town atmosphere. This is one of the oldest settlements on Crete, with an incredible Minoan archaeological site right on the edge of the village. While not one of Crete's major tourist destinations, visitors who want a more authentic, working-class experience will likely enjoy the scene in Archanes. Its narrow streets are a joy to explore, offering a diverse selection of traditional shops, churches, tavernas and cafes. As one of Crete's most important wine-growing areas, visitors can expect some excellent local tipples for sale in the shops and tavernas. Its location at the base of sacred Mount Giouchtas also means that there is hiking nearby, and several beach resorts can be reached in minutes by heading down to the coast.
