Introduction to Crete - Agios Nikolaos
The Greek island of Crete is one of the country’s most famous islands for its beautiful coast and its role in history and ancient Greek myths. One of the most popular places to stay is Crete Agios Nikolaos. This town has a great coastal location about an hour from the Cretan capital, Heraklion, and the airport. There is a wide range of Crete hotels in the busy town centre here, which is filled with top bars, clubs and restaurants as well as some great shopping opportunities. There is a ferry port with regular ferries to other islands of Greece, as well as relaxing pleasure cruises. The town boasts a lake, Lake Voulismeni, which is lined with cafes and restaurants and has a dive centre on hand. This compact historical town features many old buildings which give it a traditional, old style feel. As well as beach activities and water sports, there are a number of churches and museums: a good archaeological museum, a folklore museum and an iris museum.
