Introduction to Corfu - Kanoni
The Greek beach resort of Kanoni, just south of Corfu Town on the island of Corfu, received its name from the cannons and other artillery French soldiers established here in 1798. One of these cannons remains standing at the main tourist kiosk. Kanoni hotels are the main sources of most local nightlife, and one of the more luxurious resorts contains the resort's most visited beach, which is open to the public. However, most visitors tend to be more mature couples who are more attracted to historic landmarks than beaches. A cement dock connects the resort to the tiny islet containing the 17th century Monastery of Vlaherna, while Odysseus is said to have crashed on the nearby Mouse Island, also known as Pontikonissi. The Pandokrator Byzantine chapel also stands on the small Pontikonissi Island.
