While lounging in a beachside taverna on the western coast of Corfu, visitors will love the fact that the Afionas area offers some of the island's most spectacular views. This idyllic Greek village occupies a peninsula jutting into the Ionian Sea, where Mediterranean waters swirl together with Adriatic currents. To the southeast, the cliffs of Akri Falakra can be seen beyond Agios Georgios Bay, while the islands of Kravia, Sikia and Gineka decorate the ocean to the northwest. Visitors have a choice of three beaches from which to admire the land and sea, all within walking distance of Afionas hotels. An old church and bell tower can be reached from the web of narrow, flower-filled streets branching out from the colourful village centre. A half hour's walk from town takes tourists to the ruins of Porto Timoni, quietly dilapidating since 300 BC.
