Introduction to Chios, Greece
The fifth-largest island in Greece is Chios. It is located in the Aegean Sea, just seven kilometres off the coast of Turkey. A long heritage of maritime shipping pervades around the island, creating a fascinating nautical culture to go with its beautiful beaches and quaint fishermen villages. Among the many highlights on the island, the 11th-century Nea Moni monastery is not to be missed. This UNESCO World Heritage site has some of the finest mosaics in Europe. Chios is the main town on the island, containing the best concentration of traveller amenities as well as notable venues like the Archaeological Museum and the Chios Byzantine Museum. The medieval castle in the centre of town is a wonderful example of period architecture. Scattered throughout the interior are numerous medieval villages in the Kambochoria region, ideal for exploration. The northern and western coasts are home to several fishing villages as well as farming communities that grow cherries and mastic gum, a commodity that is famous throughout Greece. While most of the hotels in Chios are located in the main town, the coastal communities also feature resorts catering to tourists. other spellings: chios otel, chioces hotell, cheos hote, shioshotels, sheos hotle, chi os hotes
