Introduction to Chalkida, Greece
Chalkida is the main city on the island of Evia, also known as Euboea in Greece. Among visitors, the most popular part of the city, which also goes by the name Chalcis, is the seafront, where there are a large number of excellent Chalkida hotels as well as a beautiful promenade featuring a host of excellent restaurants. This area feels more like a Greek town than a city, while nearby are excellent nightlife options including bars and clubs. The city has two main parts, the Old Town of Castro and the modern adjacent suburb. The old quarter is contained within the remains of the old city wall, parts of which were destroyed in an 1894 earthquake. The highlight here is the Byzantine Saint Paraskevi Church. The old area's Jewish population was reduced following WWII, but remnants of this aspect of the community are still seen today in its synagogues. The city is the closest point to the Greek mainland and therefore the first port of call for visitors crossing the strait.
