Introduction to Athens - Syntagma Square
Athens is one of the most historically important cities in Europe and also one of the most visited for its ancient temples and historical sights, modern shopping facilities and lively nightlife, and its close proximity to the beautiful coast. Athens Syntagma Square boasts a number of famous Athens hotels and is home to the neo-classical Hellenic Parliament building, opened in 1840. The name of the square translates as Constitution Square and the area has been the site of many battles, demonstrations, rallies and political speeches. It also houses the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, guarded by the elite soldiers called evzones, who wear amazing uniforms. The Changing of the Guard can be observed at 18.00 daily, while feeding the square’s famous pigeons is another popular pastime. The entrance to the National Gardens lies on the square, as do a number of famous hotels. Those seeking sustenance can make use of the upmarket coffee shops in the hotels, or people-watch at outdoor cafes. Transport options are great here, with a new metro station and the terminus for the Athens Coastal Tram. The square is on the edge of the popular Plaka area.Visit our Athens Travel Guide
