Introduction to Athens - Plaka
The district of Plaka, situated at the foot of the Athens Acropolis, has long been considered one of the most desirable and beautiful neighbourhoods in Greece's national capital. In fact, many visitors compare the district's atmosphere to several smaller towns on Greece's many islands, partly because motorised vehicles are banned from most of the district's streets. Amplified music was banned in Plaka during the 1970s, but the neighbourhood remains lively thanks to its many restaurants, cafes, boutiques and souvenir shops. There are approximately a dozen Plaka hotels within a variety of price ranges, but those with the best reputations tend to fill up fast. Many of the buildings on the district's streets date back to the Ancient Greek, Roman and Ottoman eras, but the oldest and most famous structure of all is the Roman Agora. A fountain, a museum, the 11th century Agias Apostoli church and the eight-sided Tower of the Winds are all part of this ancient agora. Plaka also contains museums dedicated to Greek folk art and popular musical instruments as well as the Benaki Museum of Islamic Art.Visit our Athens Travel Guide
