Introduction to Athens - Lycabettus Hill
No part of Greece's capital city stands higher than the 277m high Lycabettus Hill, which has towered over Athens since the Ancient Greek era. In those days, lush vegetation covered this hill, with a temple honouring the Greek god Zeus at its highest point. Although the temple no longer exists and the vegetation no longer covers all of Lycabettus Hill, visitors can still enjoy spectacular views of many ancient Athens landmarks from the top of the hill. Visitors can either climb to the summit on foot along narrow paths or ride aboard a cable car. However, Lycabettus Hill offers more than just a breathtaking Athens view. Once visitors reach its summit, they can dine at the restaurant here, enjoy live entertainment at the outdoor theatre or explore the small and white St George Church. Most Lycabettus Hill hotels are four- or five-star upscale establishments in a district known as Kolonaki, at the hill's base.Visit our Athens Travel Guide
