Introduction to Athens - Kolonaki
No central Athens district has a more upscale reputation than Kolonaki, situated on the southeast slope of one of Athens' most famous landmarks, Lycabettus Hill. Both the hill and the Athens Acropolis can easily be seen from most Kolonaki hotels, many of which rank among Athens' most luxurious accommodations. Several cafes border the centrally located Kolonaki Square, an ideal people watching place. Also in the middle of the district is the impressive Saint Dionysius the Areopagite church, named after one of Athens' three city protectors. Unique boutiques, independent antique shops, and intimate art galleries line the streets, one of which, Tsakaloff, is closed to motorised vehicles. Some of Athens' most impressive museums are also found here, including ones dedicated to the history of traditional Greek costumes and theatre. Many more impressive and ancient artefacts are exhibited inside the Museum of Cycladic Art and the Benaki Museum.Visit our Athens Travel Guide
