Introduction to Alexandroupolis, Greece
The last big Greek town on the Istanbul highway before the border with Turkey is Alexandroupolis, a port town useful for catching ferries to the Greek island of Samothrace. Visitors will certainly notice the towering lighthouse sitting right on the waterfront at the city's modern harbour. It is the main landmark of Alexandroupolis, built more than a century ago, and adds a nice slice of ambiance to the harbour's promenade. The city contains all the usual amenities a traveller needs, including Greek restaurants, bars and shops for travel sundries. Most of the hotels in Alexandroupolis are mid-range and located on and around the harbour. A few budget options can be found next to the train station. Just outside the city, visitors can explore the ruins of Avandas, an ancient fortified site, or spend the day at the rocky little beach on the edge of town. Other than that, there are no cultural attractions in Alexandroupolis worth lingering over, thus most visitors move on quickly to Turkey or hop on a ferry to the islands. other spellings: alexandroupolishotels, alexsandropolis hotell, alexandropolis hote, alexandrapolis hotes
