Munich Travel Guide - Getting Around

Metro: the Metro was built to provide convenient transportation for visitors to the 1972 Olympic Games. The underground service comprises eight lines (U1 to U8), serving the central parts of the city. Trains run every 5 minutes during rush hours and every 10 minutes at other times. The Metro connects with main rail services at the Hauptbahnhof.
Train: Munich’s suburban train network, S-Bahn, operates services to the airport (on lines S1 and S8). The S1, S2 and S4-S8 trains run through a central tunnel, connecting the Ostbahnhof with the Hauptbahnhof: as the tunnel has only a single track, delays can be experienced during peak hours. From both ends of the tunnel, the tracks branch off, becoming the various lines of the S-Bahn system.
Taxi: can be found everywhere and can be hailed on the street or called in advance. Most are white Mercedes saloons: the main operators are Taxizentrale Munchen and Isarfunk Taxizentrale.
Car: traffic can be quite heavy in the city and parking is expensive. Most sights of interest can be seen on foot and the public transport network is excellent. Car hire is recommended for excursions to the surrounding areas.
