Starnberg, a formal royal summer retreat in the Five Lakes district, can be reached by S-Bahn in 30 minutes, while the magnificent Bavarian Alps are only an hour and a half by car.
Starnberg Five Lakes Region: the Starnbergersee and Ammersee are favourite weekend destinations for Munich residents and offer a range of water sports as well as a place to hike and enjoy the spectacular scenery.
Prien am Chiemsee: around 60 miles south-east of Munich you’ll find one of Bavaria’s most beautiful lakes, surrounded by the Alps and lined with resorts. The main attractions here however, are the lake’s two islands: the Frauenchiemsee and Herrenchiemsee. A palace was built by Ludwig II on Herrenchiemsee, with the goal of creating a rival to Versailles in France. Steamers make scheduled trips to the islands throughout the day.
Dachau: was one of the most notorious concentration camps set up by the Nazi regime. It was established at the site of an ammunition factory, in the pastoral area surrounding Munich. This was the first of the German camps and saw more than 200,000 people imprisoned here.
